Jul 9, 2023

County Commissioner Kevin Roberts, whose father, Jerald Roberts was awarded the Order of the Purple Heart for wounds received in the Battle of Peleliu, codenamed Operation Stalemate II in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

Commissioner Kevin Roberts remarks that he would like to see Highlands County have coins similar to the one below  made up to commemorate the county’s 10 years as a ‘Purple Heart Community,’ since Nov. 19, 2013.

Commissioner Kevin Roberts would like Highlands County to have its own coins.
These would be challenge coins marking Highlands as a “Purple Heart Community.”

Florida, designated a Purple Heart State by The Military Order of the Purple Heart, has dozens of such designated towns, cities, counties and routes. They include Frostproof, Sebring, Highlands County and the length of U.S. 27.
